Online Reliable Resources

How do you know the
Online Resources are reliable?

  1. The books in the library have been vetted.  That means that they have been examined and reviewed ahead of time by experts in the field they are about.  These books have also been edited by professionals, and finally reviewed by professionals.  Library books have been through a process to check for reliability.
  2. The library catalog guides you to find non-fiction books that were written  by experts and chosen by a professional based upon reviews, student interest and/or curriculm need.
  3. Nettrekker sites have been vetted too.  Educators have searched the web ahead of time for you to find reliable sites to meet curriculum needs.  The educators continually monitor those sites that they chose.
  4. Nettrekker is an educational search engine that will save you time and provide you with reliable resouces if you are searching for information for most school assignments.
  5. All the other subscription online databases were written by experts and reviewed and selected by professional educators because of their excellence in supporting your educational needs.

PeoPeople make mistakes.  Even experts make mistakes.
    • These resources are the most reliable resources we can find.
    • It is always a good idea to find two resources that say the same thing when you are in doubt about some information you read or hear.

    What about Google?

    • Google has reliable resources.
    • It also has unreliable resources.
    • That leaves you with the responsibility of determining which sites from Google are reliable and which sites are not.

      Citing Sources

        When do you site sources?
You always site sources you use that provide uncommon knowledge.

      Why do you site sources?

      • It’s expected and required by most teachers.
      • It is the ethical thing to do.
      • If you need to find the facts again, you have the location.
      • Teachers may want to check the reliability of your sources.
      • Teachers may want to compare what you have written to what the original source said.

      How do you site sources?

      • Most of the resources listed above will provide you with correct citation format.  You can just copy and paste the citation.  That's the only thing you can copy!
      • Use the color-coded book that Mrs. Edwards made for Citing Sources that is a ready reference in the library.
      • You can use Long Island University's MLA Citation reference .
      • If you have to document your source yourself, use Citation Machine  or use EasyBib widget below.
      • EasyBib: the bibliography maker .
